Fishing at Crescent Head
Where to fish at Crescent Head, NSW — the Killick Creek estuary, the beaches, the rocks and the boat ramp. A local guide to wetting a line on the Mid North Coast.
Crescent Head is a quietly excellent fishing town. Estuary, beach, rocks and open water are all within a few minutes — here’s where to drop a line.
Killick Creek estuary
Cross the bridge from the point and you’re at the estuary — the easy, family-friendly option. Bream, flathead and whiting come through, especially around the tide changes. Calm water, good for kids learning, and a nice spot to throw in a line at sunset.
Walk from The Deck: about 10–15 minutes.
Beach fishing
The front beach and the quieter back beaches to the south are good for beach worms, dart, bream and the occasional jewfish. The back beaches reward those willing to walk (or drive, with a 4WD and a National Parks permit) — fewer people, more gutters to read.
Off the rocks
The headland offers rock-fishing spots, but treat them with respect — never fish alone, watch the swell, wear a life jacket, and know the conditions. The ocean here can turn quickly.
Out on the water
There’s a boat ramp at the estuary if you’re towing a tinnie — head out the creek mouth for the inshore reefs. Always check the bar and the forecast before crossing.
What you’ll need
Bring your own gear — bait and tackle can be picked up in town or in Kempsey (12km away). Check current NSW fishing rules, bag limits and any closures before you go, and grab a recreational fishing licence if you don’t have one.
After the catch
Back at The Deck there’s a full kitchen with a 900mm cooktop to cook up the day’s catch, and a deck with a view to eat it on. Can’t beat fresh flathead and a sunset over the bay.
