A family home
opened up when we're not in it.
We bought The Deck in 2019. The bones were good. The view was the reason. Over the years we've kept the things that make it feel like a real home, and refreshed the things that wear out — new carpet through the bedrooms, a brand-new 900mm cooktop, a day bed that gets more use than it should.
Liss looks after the linens and the pantry. Trent answers the messages and stocks the firewood in winter. We use the place ourselves a few times a year, and open it up when we're not in it.
Three hundred and twenty-nine guests have stayed so far. About one in five has already booked again.

The layout
How the house actually works.
Photos tell you what a place looks like. They're less good at telling you how it lives. Here's the honest version.
The deck is the living room
It wraps the house, with the ocean on one side and the hinterland on the other, which means there's shade and there's sun at every hour of the day. Most guests eat out here, work through a bottle out here, and end up watching the weather roll in from out here. The inside is where you sleep.
Downstairs does the dirty work
The outdoor shower, the garage and the boards all live downstairs. It's the reason the house copes well with sandy kids, wet wetsuits and a salty dog — everything gets rinsed before it comes up. Please keep dogs off the carpeted bedroom floors.
Three bedrooms, two configurations
Two queens and a room with two singles. That works as two couples plus kids, one family, or a surf crew of six. Couples regularly book it just for two and use the second queen as a wardrobe, which we think is a perfectly good use of a bedroom.
The kitchen is a real one
A 900mm gas and electric cooktop, a full-size fridge, a dishwasher and a pantry already stocked with the basics. This matters more here than it would in a bigger town — Crescent Head has about a dozen places worth eating and you won't want all of them in one week.
What it isn't: it's a beach house, not a hotel and not an office. There's no desk, no lift, and the walk back up from the beach is a hill. The property isn't fully fenced — the upper deck is the secure spot for a dog. We'd rather you knew all of that before you booked than after you arrived.

How far is the house from the beach?
Seven minutes' walk downhill to the beach and the point. Worth knowing that the walk home is uphill — it's a short climb, but it's a climb, and it matters if anyone in your group finds hills hard.
How many people does it sleep?
Six across three bedrooms — two queens and a third with two single beds. Extra guests beyond six are by arrangement at $20 per person per night.
Is there a cot or high chair?
No. We don't keep baby gear at the house, so if you're travelling with a little one you'll need to bring or hire a cot and high chair.
Is the property fenced for dogs?
Not fully. The upper deck is the secure area — enclosed, so you can leave a dog out there safely. The yard is open, so dogs need supervision or a lead down there.
What's the internet like?
Starlink, around 200mbps, which is considerably better than most of the town gets. It holds up for streaming and video calls. There's no desk or office setup, though — this is a beach house, not a workspace.
Is there parking for a boat or trailer?
There's a double garage, a driveway and free street parking, so there's room for a trailer or a boat. The garage is also where the boards and beach gear live.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in from 2pm, check-out by 10am. Late check-out is often available if the calendar allows — just ask, and we usually answer within the hour.
Is the fireplace usable year-round?
Yes, and firewood and kindling are supplied. In the colder months we pre-lay the first fire so you only need a match. There's air-conditioning and pedestal fans for the summer end of the year.

A few small things.
We're a real home, not a hotel. These keep it that way.
- Six guests max. Extras by arrangement at $20 / person / night.
- Dogs welcome. Not in the carpeted bedrooms, please.
- Smoking allowed on the deck only. Not inside.
- No parties. Quiet hours late at night out of respect for neighbours.
- Check-in from 2pm. Late check-out often available. Just ask.
- Check-out by 10am. Empty the dishwasher and bins before you leave.
