Day trips from Crescent Head
The best day trips from Crescent Head, NSW — South West Rocks, Trial Bay Gaol, Smoky Cape, Port Macquarie and the Macleay Valley hinterland.
Part of the charm of Crescent Head is that you don’t need to leave. But it also makes a brilliant base for exploring the Macleay Valley and the wider Mid North Coast. Here are the day trips worth the drive.
South West Rocks & Trial Bay (about 1 hour north)
The pick of the day trips. South West Rocks is a gorgeous little town with calm swimming at Horseshoe Bay, and right beside it sits Trial Bay Gaol — a dramatic 19th-century ruin on the headland, full of kangaroos and history. Nearby Smoky Cape Lighthouse has some of the best coastal views on the coast, and Hat Head National Park stretches between there and home.
Best for: history, a change of beach, a proper day out.
Hat Head village (about 30 minutes north)
Smaller and even sleepier than Crescent, Hat Head sits at the mouth of the Korogoro Creek inside Hat Head National Park. Walk up to the Hat Head itself for the views, swim in the creek, or just have a quiet lunch. A lovely half-day.
Port Macquarie (about 1 hour south)
The big smoke, relatively speaking. Port Macquarie has the famous Koala Hospital, the Sea Acres rainforest boardwalk, a coastal walk linking its beaches, breweries and plenty of cafés — a good rainy-day or mixed-interest option. See our Crescent Head vs Port Macquarie comparison.
Kempsey & the Macleay Valley (15–30 minutes)
Kempsey (12km) is the practical hub — supermarkets, the Akubra story and the Slim Dusty Centre. Push further into the valley for Gladstone, a pretty historic river village, and the rolling farmland of the Macleay.
The back beaches & Goolawah (south, 4WD)
Closer to home, head south on Point Plomer Road into Goolawah and the empty back beaches — 4WD and a National Parks permit for beach driving, or walk in. Dramatic, uncrowded coastline and good fishing.

Making South West Rocks a full day
It’s the pick, and it’s worth doing properly rather than as a drive-by.
A good running order: leave after breakfast, do Trial Bay Gaol first while it’s cool — the 1886 ruin sits on the headland with kangaroos on the grass and self-guided tours. Then a swim at Horseshoe Bay, which is a sheltered cove right in town and calm enough for small kids. Lunch in town. Smoky Cape Lighthouse, built in 1891, on the way home for the coastal views.

A note on taking the dog
Most of these day trips involve national parks, and national parks in NSW don’t permit dogs — that includes Hat Head National Park between here and South West Rocks, and Arakoon around Trial Bay.
If the dog is with you, the day trips that work are Kempsey, the Macleay Valley, and the dog-friendly regional park south of town at Goolawah. Everything else means leaving them at the house. More detail in our dog-friendly guide.
Before you drive anywhere
- Fuel up in Kempsey. Options in Crescent Head are limited.
- Watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk on the roads between here and the highway. They’re common through the farmland and they don’t travel alone.
- Check the tide if the plan involves a beach or an estuary swim at the other end.
- Reception is patchy on some of these routes — load your directions before you leave town.
A base worth coming back to
The beauty of day trips from Crescent Head is the coming home — back to the deck, the fire, and the quiet, seven minutes from the beach. The Deck makes an easy base for all of it, and the dog can come as long as you check which parks allow them first. On the days you’d rather not drive anywhere, there’s plenty on in town.
