A weekend in Crescent Head: the perfect 48 hours
How to spend a weekend in Crescent Head, NSW — a relaxed 48-hour itinerary of surf, beach, bakery, bistro and headland walks, from the hosts of The Deck.
Two days is just enough to fall for Crescent Head — and just short enough that you’ll start planning the next trip before you leave. Here’s how we’d spend the perfect weekend.
Friday
4pm — Arrive. Drop the bags at The Deck, pour a wine, and let the deck do the rest. Ocean on one side, hinterland on the other, the light going gold over the bay.
6pm — Settle in. Too good to leave the house on the first night. Light the fire if it’s cool, cook in the big kitchen, and watch for kangaroos in the back paddock at dusk.
Saturday
6:30am — Dawn patrol. Walk seven minutes down the hill to the point break — one of the longest, mellowest longboard waves in the country. Even if you don’t surf, the headland at sunrise is worth the walk.
9am — Barnett’s. The best bakery on the Mid North Coast. Get a pie. Get a custard tart too. Don’t overthink it.
11am — Beach time. Front Beach for a patrolled swim, or cross the bridge to Killick Creek for glassy, calm water. Take the dog — much of the area is dog-friendly.
1pm — Long lunch. Sea Sea or Cheetah Five for something relaxed and dog-friendly, with the town’s best coffee.
5pm — Sundowner. Back on the deck. Hat Head turning gold, a fire, a glass of something. This is the bit you’ll remember.
Sunday
8am — Killick Creek. A swim, a fish, or a slow coffee by the estuary before the day warms up.
10am — The headland walk. A short climb for the postcard view, kangaroos on the grass, and in winter and spring, whales passing offshore.
12pm — Country club. Walk up for a round on the six-hole course, a roll on the bowls green, or just a cold one and a bistro lunch looking over the bay before you hit the road.
Make it longer
A weekend’s never quite enough here. If you can stretch it, add the back beaches to the south, a day trip up the coast, or simply another morning on the deck.
